2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back...

Well if you read the title you probably guessed that I had a few slip ups this last weekend, but as long as I'm still two forward and only one back then I am doing better than not!

I did really well all through Friday until dinner. Tony's brother and wife and son came to town so we ordered pizza. I ate less than I normally would (old me = 4-5 pieces, new me = 2 1/2 pieces). It was veggies and hamburger on it I think. But I can justify it because Saturday we spent the day walking the Zoo, so I pretty much walked a good portion of that off. Then I was good Sat. and Sun. until Sun. night when I didn't feel good and neither did Tony, so we got Chinese take out. I can honestly but grudingly admit that I ate my whole meal and then some, but my proud point with the whole Chinese thing is that today I would normally have eaten all of the leftovers myself - BUT I used it for daycare and they had a Chinese buffet of sorts. So there! :)

I'm not being too hard on myself for a few reasons. First being that I lost a total of 5 pounds already from Tuesday until Sunday. So that's awesome for me!! Just 70 more to go!! But for number two, I keep telling myself not to get depressed about a slip up here and there because I am new to this whole eating less than I normally do thing. It really does take training! You wouldn't believe how exhausting it can be sometimes when I think I need a snack (when I don't) and to keep walking into the kitchen and rummaging through the cabinets and fridge, just to tell myself that I don't need anything and walk out. That alone should earn me a few walking exercise points right??

Which brings me to my next topic. Exercise. I wish I could be a fly on someones wall to see when and how they exercise on a daily basis. I don't get it. I don't understand how ANYONE, especially with kids, can find the time in their day to work out. It stresses me out actually that I still cannot find a time slot in my day to work out. You might ask why not work out instead of blog. Well the simple answer to that is because it's easier to get on the computer during nap time than it is to do a workout video when 4-6 kids are quietly watching a movie during nap time. I am still working on this part, but for now trying to keep tackling the eating 1/2 my portion size is enough to worry about. I have to master that part first.

So please keep cheering me on. I need some support! I need people to tell me NOT to eat snacks and NOT to give in to yummy temptations!

Right now I am feeling the urge to eat too because I am a bored eater and a stress eater and my constant stress right now is trying to figure out how I am going to get all the kids to and from school this next year. I have too many kids to fit in my Suburban and I need a solution before Aug. 16.

Alright I better go throw together a small meatloaf for dinner tonight. I have to take Owen and Raymond to their first swimming lessons at 6:20! I'm very excited for them.

  1. You can totally do this! I'm not just saying that either - if you made it through the pizza, you really can do it! Exercise is tricky for any mom I think and extra tricky for you with the daycare I bet. I have a lot of friends who have either an elliptical or stair-stepper or something like that in their house and they get on it after their kids go to bed. They say they can watch a show or something and still feel like they can unwind (which is what I like to do when the kids go down!) I don't actually exercise technically. I try to go on a walk with the boys every day or two and that's about as close as I get to exercise (besides the life of running after a toddler!) I know that's not really a good option for you with all the extra kids. If I think of any useful ideas, I will pass them on. I agree that dealing with eating is more important as step 1 and trying to change too much at once would overwhelm me and make me give up completely! Anyway, I'm cheering for you and really think you can do it!

  2. As I've said, exercising is my strong point - I get into the habit of it. The problem with me is that I feel like I sabatoge it by eating unhealthy. I really need to work on the eat better part, and over the years have considered going "raw," because I feel like that's the only thing that will work for me. I would have to do more research on that and how to get a balanced diet out of it, because I know it can be done. I had a bunch of websites saved a few years ago + raw diet books I wanted to purchase. I have vegetarian tendencies, so might as well dive head first into the world of bunny food. :)

I think for exercise, DVDs with a group of 10-minute workouts would be good. There's a series called "10 Minute Solution" - I have a couple of their DVDs. Plus there are quite a few other videos that have this format of exercise (as opposed to one 30 min workout or whatever.)

Do you still subscribe to Shape? If so, you should do the toning exercises in their magazine, or find videos on their site + sites of other exercise magazines. Here, I'll do the work for you (your job will be to copy/paste all of these links.) :)

(I think Oxygen can get female bodybuilderish, but does have some exercises that don't require barbells and a bench.)

(Couldn't find videos of workouts, but there are workouts.)

Just watch the moves a few times, find a place to do 'em, and get in some toning action in. Just give each body section a break each day. I do one of the following:
    1. Cardio + upper body/abs
    2. Cardio + lower body/abs
    *alternate these*
    OR
    1. Cardio + total body toning
    2. Cardio (skip toning on this day)
    *alternate these*

Below is a link to the 10-Minute solution videos, which you can preview. Notice how they have a wide range of exercise types, and all have 5 10-minute workouts, so even if you're only able to get in one workout a day to start, that takes care of the week and eventually, you can work up to more than one per day.

I'm sure you'll figure something out when it comes to exercising, but hopefully this has been helpful.

This comment is an entry in itself!! Sorry if it's so rambly!!

  3. Drink water any time you feel you need a snack and then wait a few minutes. The water will fill you up - even if you're not hungry - and then you especially won't want anything! Keep going! I need to get on the exercise regime. I suck at that now. :(
